A single-herb liquid extract of dried flowers of Sambucus nigra, cold-macerated in small batches and offered either as a traditional tincture in organic sugar-cane alcohol or as a vegetable glycerite.

About the plant

Elderflower is picked on a dry sunny morning, when the flat creamy corymbs are fully open and the scent is at its heaviest — muscat, honey and something slightly catty underneath, which is the aroma compounds elder shares with certain white wine grapes. They have to be used or dried the same day; left overnight in a heap they go brown and the smell turns unpleasant. The tree itself is a scruffy fast-growing thing of hedges and waste ground with brittle pith-filled stems.

Glycerite: Sambucus nigra dried flowers, vegetable glycerin USP, distilled water.

No added sugar. Contains no artificial colours, preservatives or fragrances.

Suggested use

Shake well before use. Take 20–30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner.

Warnings

Only the flowers are used; the green parts and raw berries of elder are cyanogenic. Not for use by anyone taking immunosuppressants. Not for use in pregnancy.
